What are Popped Chips?
Popped chips are a healthy, wholesome snack option. They can be made of potato, rice, corn, chickpeas, sorghum, or several of these, and most are subjected to pressure heat until they pop. They are baked, not fried. They lack oil and contain less fat than fried potato chips, no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives, but are bursting with flavor.
Popped Snack Systems
RBS has partnered with Incomec, a Belgium-based popping/puffing equipment manufacturer, to supply American and Canadian customers with specialized popped snack equipment.
RBS furnishes the required auxiliary equipment, such as conveyors, feeders, seasoners, and supplies sales support, installation, and technical support for our Popped Snack Systems.
Depending on the product you want to produce, Incomec will furnish a Pellex C+ or Cerex Processor. The Popped Snack line is scalable, so you can add processors to your line as your business grows.
- Pellex C+Processor: This processor produces light, crunchy popped chip products. It converts micropellets and dry ingredients with high free starch levels, including broken rice, corn grits, and potato-based materials, into crispy, wavy chips.
- Cerex Processor: This grain processor converts untreated grain, pellets, and cereal blends with high free starch levels into unique popped products. Create puffed rice cakes and cracker and biscuit type products in various sizes with quick and simple changes of the forming dies.
The Popped Chip Production Process
- Feed ingredients through a hopper that is volumetrically metered and introduced by a feed-slide into a heated mould.
- The processor pressurizes the ingredients for a short time. This converts the ingredient moisture into steam, which results in expansion or popping.
- Open the mould slightly to allow the ingredients to expand and form the product.
- Eject finished products onto a conveyor, leading them to a Cleaning Drum to remove unpopped ingredients and fines and then to flavoring and packaging.
